OpenAI is venturing back into open AI models with the introduction of GPT-oss. CEO Sam Altman unveiled this new family of language models featuring open weights, which he claims can be effectively run on high-end laptops and smartphones.
These “open weights” models allow users to download the fully trained parameters, enabling anyone to run, inspect, or refine the AI locally. Altman stated on X that GPT-oss represents “the best and most usable open model in the world.”
The rollout includes two variations: gpt-oss-120b, designed for high-end systems, and gpt-oss-20b, which is more suited for typical desktops and laptops. According to Altman, the performance of GPT-oss is strongly comparable to the performance of other models available in the market.
This announcement comes just before the anticipated launch of ChatGPT-5, marking OpenAI’s first open-weight model release since GPT-2 in 2019. Altman expressed optimism that this release would foster new research avenues and stimulate product development, ultimately accelerating innovation within the AI sector.
Notably, Meta has been publishing the open weights of its LLAMA AI models, reinforcing the competitive landscape in this area.
