Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed relief that his thoughts were unreadable during his meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday. After a reporter inquired about his mindset when Trump stated he wanted Canada to become part of the US, Carney replied, “I’m glad you could not tell what was going through my mind.”
Throughout their discussion, Carney made it clear that Canada is “not for sale.” Trump has previously threatened and imposed tariffs on Canada and has mentioned the idea of adopting Canada as the 51st state. “The president has been vocal about this for a while, but I’ve always been careful to distinguish between wish and reality,” Carney stated post-meeting.
He emphasized in the Oval Office and throughout his remarks that this will never happen: “Canada is not for sale and never will be.”
During a joint press conference, Trump reiterated his stance, claiming it would be a “wonderful marriage” between the two countries. Carney remained neutral as Trump spoke. “As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale,” Carney responded, further asserting that while Canada is not for sale, there are ample opportunities for partnership.
Carney assumed leadership of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party in March after Justin Trudeau stepped down amid criticism, following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland. Initially trailing in polls, the Liberal Party gained support due to Trump’s aggressive tariff policies, resulting in them winning 169 out of 343 parliamentary seats in the recent elections.
In his victory speech, Carney warned that America desires Canada’s land and resources, asserting, “That will never happen.”
