My First Trip to Seattle: Surprises and Discoveries
On a sunny day in June 2025, I stepped off the train at King Street Station in Seattle, ready for an adventure I had long anticipated. Yet, as I walked the mile to my downtown hotel, I quickly realized it felt more like a hike than a stroll.
My first day was filled with unexpected finds. I stumbled upon a curious chewing-gum-speckled wall in an alley and, later, a free snack cart while exploring the busy streets. For a New Yorker like me, Seattle was a delightful surprise full of unique attractions.
During a weeklong trip from NYC to the West Coast, I finally made it to this vibrant city after years of dreaming. Though I had traveled up the Pacific Coast before, I’d never ventured as far north as Washington State—until now.
Unexpected Travel Costs
Traveling from Vancouver to Seattle was an eye-opener regarding prices. I was astonished to find that a train ticket cost just $50, significantly less than the $150 airfare for the same day. While it took around four hours by train—compared to a one-hour flight—I relished the opportunity to experience the changing landscapes.
A Comfy Journey
My train ride was surprisingly comfortable. The economy seat felt roomier than typical airplane seats, allowing me to enjoy the trip without the usual neck and back pain associated with flying. I was genuinely impressed by the difference in comfort.
Walking in Seattle
Arriving in Seattle around noon, I attempted to walk to my hotel. I hadn’t anticipated that a mile in Seattle would feel so arduous compared to New York, especially with the uphill trek that left me breathless.
Exploring Pike Place Market
One of my first stops was Pike Place Market, an iconic outdoor space I’d heard about for years. I found it bustling with locals and tourists alike, navigating through crowds eager to glimpse the famous fish market. While the cobblestone streets were car-free during my visit, I learned that they often accommodate vehicular traffic, which could disrupt the pedestrian experience.
Discovering Unique Attractions
Wandering near the market, I stumbled upon Seattle’s famous Gum Wall—a colorful and somewhat gross sight filled with chewed gum from visitors. Initially taken aback, I later found it oddly fascinating as a quirky form of communal art.
A Three-Story Target
While in search of a charger, I discovered a massive three-story Target downtown. My previous experiences with Targets in NYC were limited to small store formats, so encountering this colossal retail space was a pleasant surprise.
Nature Amidst Technology
Exploring the tech-centric South Lake Union neighborhood, I was struck by the presence of parks and greenery. With companies like Amazon making their home here, I anticipated a landscape dominated by glass buildings, but found an inviting blend of nature and technology instead.
The Free Banana Stand
One of my most delightful discoveries was a free banana stand situated between Amazon buildings. Visually striking in its bright yellow, this stand aimed to offer healthy snacks to anyone passing by—a thoughtful and unique touch that mirrored the city’s community spirit.
A Volcano on the Horizon
From a hotel rooftop, a local pointed out Mount Rainier, an active volcano just a short distance away. It was startling to realize how close a potential natural disaster loomed over such a densely populated city.
A Memorable Experience
Overall, my trip to Seattle was everything I had hoped for and more. The city’s blend of urban life and natural beauty, along with its quirky characters and surprises, left me eager to return and explore further. Seattle had made its mark on me, providing a refreshing escape from New York City.
