My first New Year’s Eve away from my daughter was spent welcoming the new year in the enchanting city of Budapest.
I had arranged a few activities in advance, including a tour of the stunning Hungarian Parliament Building and an evening cruise on the Danube River. Additionally, I secured tickets to see the operetta “Die Fledermaus” at the opera house. Even though I didn’t speak Hungarian, the experience of watching elegantly dressed patrons in tuxedos and gowns was a thrilling adventure.
Many aspects of my trip allowed for spontaneity, like joining an impromptu nighttime photography tour and enjoying a local lunch of paprikash and cream cake at a restaurant recommended by an Uber driver.
Navigating Budapest was a breeze, thanks to its walkability. The Buda and Pest sides are connected by grand bridges with pedestrian walkways, making it easy to explore on foot. While trams and taxis were available, walking allowed for a deeper experience of the city’s beauty.
All in all, Budapest completely took my breath away.
