On our way back to university after visiting family, my partner and I found ourselves in a tough situation. I was young and honestly should have known how to change a flat tire by that age. As the sun set, I nervously flipped through the owner’s manual for help.
We were still hours away from our destination and lacked money for a hotel if I couldn’t fix the tire. I turned on the hazard lights and rummaged through the trunk for the spare tire and jack. Just as I was about to grab the tools, I noticed an old pickup truck idling near us. A man stepped out and approached.
I was completely taken by surprise. Without any introduction, he asked for the tools and immediately got to work. He explained each step, from raising the car with the jack to loosening the bolts before removing the flat tire.
He was a lifesaver.
What he accomplished in minutes would have taken me at least an hour. I helped him pull off the old tire, roll over the new one, and finalize the installation. The man showed me how to tighten some of the bolts to help me learn, checking my work before securing everything.
As soon as he finished, I felt an overwhelming gratitude for our “roadside savior.” While putting the tools away, I began crafting a thank-you speech in my mind, only to realize almost simultaneously with my partner that the man had vanished—truck and all. We hadn’t heard a thing; his departure felt surreal.
In that moment, we exchanged astonished looks, struck by the kindness we never expected. This wasn’t the typically grim scenario we had been led to believe could happen beside the road. Fortunately, we continued to a nearby town, found a new tire, and made it back to school.
Reflecting on this experience, I realized how impactful small acts of generosity can be. Initially, I was hesitant and apprehensive about accepting help from a stranger, but my fears turned out to be unfounded thanks to his kindness. It made me reconsider how I respond to others who may be facing challenges.
Though I’ll never have the chance to thank the man directly, I hope to pass on his kindness in my own life. This encounter reinforced my belief in the importance of “radical hospitality.” We all carry the weight of our experiences, and how we treat others can profoundly influence their lives. It’s worthwhile to give generously when possible and to graciously accept help when needed.
The stranger who helped me with my flat might not realize the lasting impact he had, but his kindness will remain with me forever.
